Like most dogs purchased from pet stores, Spartan's life began in a puppymill. But we'll get back to that later. Right now I want to tell you how much he was loved by his family. He had a great personality, an awesome sense of humor, and was a true fighter to his last breath. We know he loved us as much as we loved him. He is in a much better place now. He's at the gates of heaven watching for burglars. But we'll meet again someday and share another Big Mac 'n Fries and play "Peek-A-Boo Cujo"!
Spartan came to us by way of the money hungry, animal abusing, lying crooks at (PET SHOP NAME DELETED *) in, Florida. Although a friend of mine repeatedly warned me about buying an animal from a pet store, I went anyways and ended up falling in love with that cute little guy in the window.
This is picture shows him 2/8/2003, the day we brought him home. The following day he collapsed on the floor and was admitted to a veterinary clinic for 2 weeks of intensive care.

The great kisser and hugger! Spartan loves his sister Tiffany and his brother Alex. The kids used to have all sorts of funny names that he would respond to. My favorite was "Princess Fairy Godmother" a name that stuck with him after his fun day of playing beauty queen with Tiffany. When we would ask Spartan where his poo buddy was, he'd run right up and put his paw on Alex's leg.

These pictures were taken on one of his many road trips to Ohio. This was Tiffany's big college move to FAU in Boca. He loved to travel. And he loved to drive!
Tiffany let Spartan drive this on this particular trip if he agreed to wear makeup. He was a terrible driver. But "Cookie-Ride-Rides" were always exciting when Spartan was traveling with us. We would stop at the Tamarac Rest Stop on the WV turnpike. They had a little specialty store that had "the best dog cookies in the world".
The first time Spartan saw snow was at this rest stop. He got out of the car and rolled in it and licked it up. He was so happy. It took me 20 minutes to get him back in the car. Then every 50 minutes he would start barking. He was wanting me to pull over again so he could make snow angels. It was a VERY LONG TRIP, but I will never forget it. He was the best snow angel I ever saw.

Spartan's Story:

Spartan lived a short but wonderful life, given all that was wrong with his health. My husband bought our dog from a pet store. Within 24 hours of bringing him home, we had to rush him to our vet’s office where he stayed in intensive care for 2 weeks. He pulled through, only to develop sever arthritis at the ripe old age of 6 months. At that point, the vet gave our baby 2 years to live. We immediately put him on Deramax to alleviate the pain. He was in so much pain, he would drag himself outside, fall down and urinate on himself. We continued to up the dosage so he could function and be an active happy member of our family. When he was old enough I was determined to give him a better life and found a fantastic surgeon who began to replace his knee joints with artificial ones. Unfortunately, the long term usage of the Deramax caught up with him and his system shut down. He went into cardiac arrest this past Monday, June 27, 2005 and died at the vet’s office. He knew he was going, and didn’t want to die in our house.

He was so smart, had a great personality and was very handsome. He could fetch (which I thought amazing, Akita’s aren’t supposed to do that), and he LOVED other dogs (another non Akita trait). I know I’ll never be able to replace him, and I didn’t realize how awful it would be to lose Spartan. I kept thinking if I could replace all of his joints in time I could get him off the medication before it killed him. I kept that thought with me on those long nights where I had to sit up with him when he was crying. He was only 2 ½ and it breaks my heart knowing that these pet stores and bad breeders are in it for the money, never once stopping to think about the pain and suffering of the animals and their owners.

I ended up loosing my job because I couldn’t stay away from the house. I would come home on my lunch breaks and baby him. He was such a wonderful animal. I will never regret the amount of time and money spent on him. I am now thankfully retired, and Spartan only had to deal with me working the first 2 months of his life with us.

Our next dog will have as much, if not more loving attention now that I know how precious their lives are. I will never EVER purchase another animal from a pet store. Now I know that this just feeds the greedy, heartless people that own the pet stores and puppy mills. I beg everyone who reads this to educate anyone who is considering purchasing a pet store animal. We all have the power to help stop the pain.

The picture on the above left shows Spartan after his first knee surgery. The photo on the right was taken 2 days before he died. You can see the pain on his face. His heart, lungs and internal organs were so distressed he would have to sit down after every couple of steps he took. Then he would have to pull himself back up on his arthritic legs to walk a few more steps. He was scheduled to visit the vet for a check up the following week. I don't think they could have helped him. He went his own way. And I'm thankful for the fact that I didn't have to make the decision to "put him down". I still cry for him everyday. We will never forget you!

!!!NEWS FLASH!!!
I would like to thank everyone who helped with the following information.
Spartan was born in the midwest and sold at auction to largest puppy broker in the United States. Located in Missouri, (removed by advise of my attorney*) churns out 50,000 (mostly ill) puppies a year. Spartan's A.C.A. registration requires no DNA testing or actual proof of the sires or dams. Meaning you and hundreds of other new puppy owners probably own the same, identical, worthless pedigree. The owner of The pet store assured us that the A.*.A (American * Association) was the same or better than the A.K.C. The pet store also gave us the phone number of the breeder, (my attorney advised me to delete this info*) and when we spoke to him, he shared his (LIES) excitement because this was the first litter of pups that these Akitas produced. (another viewer of this site did a reverse check on the breeder's phone number that I had posted up here earlier prior to its removal. It was traced back to a phone line at The *unt* C*r*or*t**n! Not the breeder as I was told by the pet store.) Note the pictures below. This is the truth. Much too late, but this is really how they operate. See the Akitas in the cramped cages? They can't even stand up. In one of those could house Spartan's parents. We were told white Akita's are rare in normal breeding circumstances. However, I was just informed that this is not true. Just another marketing scheme lie to boost a sale. But when all the parents are white, the (rare=more money=more profits) offspring will probably be white too.

Spartan was always the center of our band when we practiced at our house.
He loved to trip Dean during practice. And everytime Ralph walked in through the door,
Spartan would put his head between his legs and try to flip him over.
Most dogs would have run to a different room, and put their paws over their ears. But not our guy. He loved the noise.
